Well, it appears that this writer is developing a bit of a potbelly, doesn’t it? Admittedly, Thai cuisine may bear some responsibility for this, but I dare say the Thai climate has its role to play as well. During this time of year, when the air becomes oppressively humid between those torrential downpours, it’s all too easy to find oneself confined indoors, especially with some restless children in tow.
Not to worry, though, we’ve compiled a list of indoor activities that’ll get the whole family up and channeling that youthful energy.
Dance, Dance, Dance
Dancing offers a multitude of benefits, even in the comfort of your own living room. It can enhance posture, strength, coordination, and burn energy without feeling like a workout. You might consider venturing into the realm of technology by investing in dance games for your gaming console, should you have one. “Just Dance Kids” is quite popular, and “Nickelodeon Dance” may prove more manageable for younger children or those who struggle with coordination. Arrange avatars and scoreboards to introduce a competitive element that’ll keep them coming back for more.
Alternatively, turn to YouTube to bring dance instructors into your living room. Set the children up with something like Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” or some lively Bollywood tunes. Saskia’s Dansschool offers a vast selection of dance tutorials as well. Encourage them to dress up and put on a performance just for you.
Revisit some classic party games with a dance twist. Musical statues, for instance, is ideal—crank up the activity level with fast-paced tunes. The Hokey Cokey is sure to leave everyone breathless, as is the Time Warp.
And if all else fails, simply let them put on their favorite songs and indulge in some freestyle dancing right there in the living room.
Indoor Olympics
Indoor mini-Olympics is an absolute winner, my dear. Involve the kids in crafting medals and a score chart. They can also design and customize their own costumes. Explore traditional events such as a long jump down the hallway, consider investing in a table tennis set, or acquire some kids’ sumo suits (available for purchase on Lazada). Throw in some special events as well—perhaps pillowcase sack races and an obstacle course.
For an excellent guide on hosting your very own Olympics, I recommend visiting the Activity Village website.
Treasure Hunts
Now, the timer—there’s nothing quite like the ticking of a clock to rev up the energy levels, no matter the activity. Set up a treasure or scavenger hunt in which the children can only claim their final treasure upon completion within a specified timeframe. To add a touch of adventure, role-play as a dragon guarding each clue, and arm them with plastic swords or kitchen roll tubes to fend you off.
Another splendid timed activity involves den building—inform them that a hurricane is approaching in 15 minutes, and they must construct their shelter before it arrives. Or hold a competition to see who can build the best den in the shortest time.
Bring Out The Boardgames
Compile a collection of items and games that promote physical activity. Twister is a brilliant choice, and you may also want to procure a set of pins and a bowling ball (or craft your own from upcycled plastic bottles). Other excellent items to have on hand include hula hoops and a ring toss set.
And what better way to spend family time together than by playing a board game that not only fosters bonding but also enhances your child’s skills in various aspects?
Indeed, playing board games as a family is a wonderful way to enjoy quality time while simultaneously nurturing critical thinking and learning skills. Children relish engaging with their loved ones, and the benefits of board games are abundant.
