All kids love a holiday camp mainly because they spend most of the year going from home to school to extracurricular activities, we also need them to break free once in a while. School holidays can also be a tough time to manage for working parents who don’t want their kids stuck at home with helpers or constantly indulging in screen time. Many parents often confess they feel guilty because they are not able to entertain their kids during school holidays because of time and money restraints. Any parent who has had to entertain kids in Bangkok during a long summer holiday can confirm this is a challenge. School holidays offer the perfect opportunity for kids to break free in an environment that is supervised.
Children who have the chance to learn new sports and try new activities gain confidence from acquiring and perfecting these skills, even if it’s just learning a new swim stroke or how to read a map, confidence is always reinforced by any type of success. Mixing with other children and attending a camp, which is outside of a child’s school and home routine, also improves their independence and self-esteem. Camps offer chances for kids to truly understand the thought that goes into making a good (or bad) decision, and will discover even more about themselves in the process.
Meritton British International school host a whole range of super fun summer camps each year from age 3 to 11 and are split into two groups Junior and Seniors each doing age appropriate fun learning experiences. Many families are eagerly anticipating this years camps so watch this space.
Junior Group
The junior kids who are between 3 and 6 years old joined the Colourful Days programme. They had a blast enjoying lots of colourful and exciting activities! They went on a colour scavenger hunt, got creative with making vibrant artworks on paper, had volcano eruptions, outdoor water gun painting, tie-dying t-shirts, making rainbow waffles, and even experimented with our food!
Senior Group
The older campers, aged 7 to 11, sharpened their critical thinking and design skills while collaborating in groups as part of our STEAM initiatives. They worked with their friends to build roller coasters and competed with other teams to see who could construct the tallest towers.
Sustainable Camp
Throughout the programme, we had one week specially focused on engaging in sustainability. Children recycled and repurposed materials from nature and the resources available to them. The children painted clay pots, made sunflower seed bombs, planted small cacti, created car toys using used plastic bottles, crafted organic soap from flowers, designed maze games with cardboard, crafted paper mache art from recycled paper, made and tasted jam using seasonal fruits (our favourite being pineapple), and cooked Lanna grilled eggs wrapped in banana leaves using traditional methods. Additionally, when the weather was great, with some sun and a gentle breeze, everyone had a fantastic time playing outside under the trees!
Let’s not forget the most exciting part: jumping into the refreshing water on those hot summer days!
